April 16, 2008 Pastoral Council
Meeting Minutes
7:00 PM
OPENING PRAYER
Fr. Bill (7:05 PM)
Present: John Cole, Pam
Stewart, Lyle Garcia, Marilyn Wickel, Mary Connolly, Fr. Bill,
Kevin Dean, Dana Wilson, Phyllis Baker and Therese Shick
1.
AGENDA OVERVIEW (Mary)
Mary Connolly discussed the 2008-09
calendar with the office staff.
The PC meetings for 2008 have previously been assigned
and these are the meeting dates for the PC meetings through June
of 2009:
January 21, 2009
February 21, 2009
March 18, 2009
April 22, 2009
May 16, 2009
June 17, 2009
Mary will provide these to Rita Price so
that they get on the main scheduling book.
2.
UPDATE RADIO PROGRAM (Pam)
Due to scheduling issues and the work
surrounding the 25th Anniversary celebration, it was
agreed that the next radio program would be postponed until the
fall of 2008. Fr.
Bill, Mary, Dana, Kevin, and Pam have expressed interest in
being a part of this program.
The date that has been proposed is Tuesday, October 28,
2008.
3.
FIVE YEAR PLAN UPDATE (Lyle)
Lyle Garcia gave two handouts that
explained the progress of the subcommittee.
They have met three times up to this point and have
another meeting scheduled for Saturday April 26th.
The subcommittee has reviewed all but 5 of the 16
sections of the Five Year Plan.
The remaining sections are substantial in nature.
Lyle hopes the review will be completed in the following
manner:
Complete the sub committee review (in process now)
Prepare a revised draft
Distribute to the PC for review, comments, and changes
Distribute/Discuss with staff and key ministries
Revise to include all changes/additions
PC approval of updated plan
As we prepare for Fr. Bill’s eventual
retirement, it is vital that we make sure our parish is in a
position to operate without him.
The Five Year Plan is key to that success.
It was also agreed that several parishioners should be
trained to lead a Liturgy in absence of a Priest.
This could be important not only when Fr. Bill retires,
but for any time when we may find we don’t have a Priest present
for Mass.
4.
RECRUITMENT UPDATE (All)
The Info Night went well with six
interested parishioners attending.
They were Eileen Papson, Roger Malone, Bill Harrison,
Joanne Gardner, Tom Rodenhi, and Kathleen Bergmann.
There will be two Discernment Evenings.
The first will be held on Thursday April 24, 2008 at 7:30
PM in the Drexel Room and will be led by Lyle Garcia and Phyllis
Baker. The second
date (if necessary) will be on Thursday, May 8th at
7:30 PM and will be led by Marilyn Wickel and Mary Connolly.
At the June 1, 2008 10:30 Mass, the new
members of the Pastoral Council will be welcomed.
The June 18, 2008 PC meeting will be the first meeting
with the new members in attendance.
Phyllis Baker will be the chairperson for the 2008-09
year, Kevin Dean will be the co-chair and Mary Connolly will be
the Secretary.
5.
NEW MEMBERS’ PROGRAM UPDATE
(Fr. Bill)
Only two people have expressed an interest
in St. John’s since we discussed this topic at our last PC
meeting. There have
been no developments in the program to this point.
6.
PASTOR’S CORNER (Fr. Bill)
-
Fr. Bill has proposed organizing
a Picnic/Party to include all present
and past Pastoral Council members.
-
Fr. Bill handed out the following
papers:
Upside Down Church: Mega Trends in Catholicism (Excerpts from
a presentation by John Allen, Jr.)
A Primer on Postmodernism by Stanley J. Grenz
Arise, my Love (Mysticism for a New Era) by William Johnston
Fr. Bill would like these documents to be
read and pondered in preparation for the Saturday, Sept. 20,
2008 PC meeting.
These will be used in the spiritual formation/discussion part of
that meeting.
-
The 25th Anniversary
Celebration continues on May 18th, 2008 at a
2:00 PM Mass.
The Anniversary book is close to being done.
Fr. Bill is hoping for some additional help in getting
the Journal together.
The menu for the celebration has been planned.
The Gala Picnic (for the 25th Anniversary)
will take place on October 4, 2008 with a Mass at 3:00 PM
followed by a picnic and activities.
-
Fr. Bill would like a renewed
emphasis placed on the spiritual
formation of the members of the Pastoral
Council. Fr. Bill
will continue to search for opportunities to do this.
He also feels more attention should be placed on prayer
within the Council.
-
It is important to make sure that
any/all activities in the Parish are
logged in the main scheduling book located
in the Office. This
includes times when someone wishes to speak at Mass or do
something in the Narthex afterward.
-
The Town Meeting for the fall has
been preliminarily set for Monday
November 10th, 2008 at 6:30 PM.
-
Barbara Martalus is the new
Chairperson of the Property Management
